Near
the summer solstice the sun sets behind the windmill. Four minutes
after sunset at ground level its rays still shine onto the clouds
steeping them orange, red and crimson.
To reach these clouds the rays have followed long curved
paths tens of miles long through the lower atmosphere.
During the journey, tiny dust particles and air molecules have scattered much light out of the direct
beams. Blue light is scattered much more strongly than the longer
wavelength red leaving the residual light illumating the clouds deeply
reddened.
