Sunrise
diamond dust sundogs, Utah. Don Brown of Park City ( Utah
Skies ) photographed this display on February 7, 2003.
The bright sundogs appear 'in front' of the distant scenery because
they were created by "diamond
dust"
ice crystals floating nearby in the subzero temperature air. Some
of the individual crystals can be seen as white specks on the image.
Of course, halos do not necessarily hang in a specific region of
space, you could no more net one than you could catch a rainbow.
They are more the mark of particular angles from the sun along which
millions of crystals glint its light most brightly. The vertical
line through the sun is an upper and lower sun
pillar produced by the same plate shape
crystals. Horizontally through the sun and extending brightly
beyond each sundog is part of the parhelic
circle. ©2003
